Wait Until Next Year

7-1, to the lowly Royals. A perfect opening day exhibition for the fatalistic minions who make up Red Sox Nation. And the Yanks came from behind to win, helped along by an A-Rod homer and a 3 strike-out 9th from Mariano. It's obvious that the much vaunted Sox have a few question marks, although I personally wouldn't advocate pushing the panic button. Still, let's reprise the low lights: Julio Lugo's 3 strike-out debut, the utilization of 6 opening day arms, o-fers for Varitek and Coco who both had weak spring training numbers, all-time great Gil Meche easily out dueling blogmaster Curt, Hideki Okijima's first pitch intro to the bigs(a John "Who That" Buck 400-foot plus smash), and my fave twin moment--Dusty Pedroia and Kyouk doing the brain dead hustle and both getting thrown out away miles away from 2nd base. See ya Wednesday with Josh (not Samuel) Beckett in the drivers seat.

was fortunate enough to be at opening day Sunday in St. Louis - "a drinking town with a baseball problem." Downtown was already a sea of red by noon for the 7pm game. Got in the park a few hours early to take in all of the pregame ceremonies. 70 degrees and blue skies. The players arrived via a motorcade followed by the AB Clydesdales. MC Billy Bob Thorton brought out the 67 and 82 championship teams, as well as Stan The Man - who looked like he could still pick up a bat and go up go 3 for 5. Finally they raised the Cards' 10th WS flag while the Mets squirmed on the sideline, knowing it could have been theirs.

70 degrees and bue skies! I've got tickets to see the Seadogs Friday nite but is snowing right now. Looking forward to seeing Ellsbury who is destined for Fenway. The kid can fly. He plays defense about 10 time better the Willie Mo. You guys need to catch him in Pawtucket if he doesn't make the leap right to the majors.
I'm not ready for the panic button, but can you imagine KC sweeping Schilling, Beckett, and Dice-k-Oh My!!

My personal fave goes today--Wakefield, a solid, do-it-all, innings-eating, team guy who happens to throw a knuckler. Every year I root for him to garner 15 or more wins, pitch a coupla emergency relief innings in the pinch, and (as usual) stay below the radar.

Let's put the Red Sox fan thing in perspective:

Anyone interested in placing a bet on the '04 World Series?

I'll take St. Louis.
